About Us
We are a Badminton England registered club based in the heart of Stockton-on-Tees.
Originally known as Guisborough Westgate, the club was founded in the early 90's and has gone through several changes during that time.
Operating as the sole Badminton England registered club in Stockton-on-Tees, the club has recently changed its name to better reflect this.
During league season we play in both the Tees Active Badminton League and the Darlington & District Badminton League .
We are always interested in meeting new players who have a keen interest in the sport and enjoy playing badminton at a good competitive level.
If you are interested in joining us for a session at Teesside's Premier Badminton Club Night, please contact us using the contact details below.

We have a selection of Yonex strings available, we'll even check and replace any damaged grommets and regrip your racket if required, a full MOT for your racket.
- Only quality Yonex strings
- Fast turn-around
- Prices from £15 to £20 per racket
You don't need to be a member of the club to use the service, should you need your racket restrung quickly, either pop down to the club on a Friday night or contact us through our Facebook page.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
When and where do you play?
We operate 4 courts at the North Shore Academy in Stockton-on-Tees (sorry American chums, not Stockton, California!), we play every Friday night (excluding Bank Holidays) from 7:30pm until 9:30pm. Our venue has ample secure and free parking, changing rooms and shower facilities are also available. Scroll to the bottom of the page for a Google map of our location.
-
How can I book a court?
To book a court, please contact North Shore Academy directly at 01642 612381.
Stockton Badminton Club only operates within the academy and is not responsible for booking courts for the public. -
Can I just turn up and play?
Unfortunately not, our club night is primarily for our members. However we usually have a few spaces available for guests. Our club nights are structured as a mini round robin tournament which is preset prior to the session and to facilitate this, we keep on top of the numbers attending to ensure a jam-packed evening. If you would like to visit, and to avoid disappointment, please contact us beforehand (contact details at the bottom of this page).
-
What equipment do I need to play badminton?
You will need a badminton racket, the club does not have any spare rackets to loan out. We would recommend bringing more than one racket depending on the level you play at, just in case you snap your strings.
-
Can children play at the club?
For insurance purposes - unfortunately not, our club can only cater for adult players who are aged 18 years and above.
-
What skill level do I need to be to play?
As this is a competitive club, we would expect any visitor to be able to understand the rules of the game and be able to play at an intermediate level.
-
Is there coaching available for beginners?
We currently do not offer any coaching, other players will gladly give tips if asked, but it is for this reason we cannot cater for complete beginners.
-
Are there tournaments or leagues that the club participates in?
We currently participate in both the Tees Valley Badminton League and the Darlington & District Badminton League. We also enter into local tournaments as and when they appear. The league season is active from October to April each year. Outside of that time, we organise and regularly play friendlies against other clubs in the area both at home and away.
-
Can I play for the club in the league and tournaments?
Absolutely! Whilst all players can play in the league, it is not a requirement. All players that express an interest in league play will get to play in either or both of the leagues we commit to during the season. You'll need to be an official member of the the club via Badminton England, but we can help you with that.
-
What is membership, how much does it cost and what does it include?
As we actively participate in the Badminton England registered leagues, during league season all our players need to be registered with the club to be able to play in any of the leagues we compete it.
Our membership fee for the 2024/25 season is £120 which includes:
- Badminton England Registration
- Club insurance
- Eligibility for selection on teams in both leagues
- Club nights included during league season (no need to pay Friday club night fee)
- More feather shuttlecocks than you could shake a stick at
-
Is it just all about the badminton?
Funny you should ask!
We're big believers in camaraderie and getting on well with each other. The majority of our members live in Stockton and as a result, tend to mingle together quite a bit. A number of us travelled down to Birmingham for a long weekend to watch the All England Badminton Open and plan to do it again next year. During the summer months it's not unheard of for a late night after game BBQ and other not as formal social events. So, it's mostly about badminton, but more about having a good time.
